Description:

Socially Engaged Philosophers and Historians of Science Community (SEPHS) is a PSA Member Community that is the listserv stemming from the former Joint Caucus for Socially Engaged Philosophers and Historians of Science (JCSEPHS). While JCSEPHS is no longer active as a caucus, the PSA is committed to supporting the community of philosophers and historians of science who were part of the caucus. The listserv is now part of the PSA Member Communities, but is also open to members of the History of Science Society. To join, click the "Sign-up" link below. If you are a PSA member, log into your account to join. If you are a member of HSS, please add that to the comments field.

Details:

The Joint Caucus of Socially Engaged Philosophers and Historians of Science (JCSEPHS) was founded in 2012 to promote research, educational and public activities in history and philosophy of science that constructively engages matters of social welfare. The JCSEPHS sought to bridge scholarly research and public debate on science funding, research ethics, race and gender in science, risk assessment, climate science, the status of embryos, genetically modified foods or organisms, and other scientific and technological matters involved in public policy debates.

With no joint or co-located meetings planned for the foreseeable future, the PSA Governing Board joined the History of Science Society Council in voting to disband JCSEPHS in 2020. The caucus has been an important catalyst for social engagement in both societies; HSS and PSA affirm a commitment to initiatives that promote social engagement and demonstrate the social relevance of our fields. We hope there will be opportunities to join forces on these issues in the future. Read more about what the PSA is doing to promote social engagement.
