PSA Office Hour

The 2022 biennial meeting in Pittsburgh was a huge success: with over 680 participants it may have been the biggest ever.  However, its very size and overdue nature meant that it was in some respects harder than ever for junior scholars to connect with more established members of the profession at this meeting. More generally, in-person meetings may in fact be a suboptimal means for connecting graduate students with more established philosophers for all sorts of reasons, in that the format makes much more likely interactions with graduate students that are already well-connected; from well-resourced programs; of certain backgrounds; and with different attitudes to engaging in carbon-intensive research practices. As such, the PSA would like to offer its graduate student membership the opportunity to interact with prominent members of our profession in a more controlled and accessible setting.

To this end, the PSA is introducing the ‘PSA Office Hour’ as a pilot project. Each month, for some months of the year, a philosophical theme will be chosen and two influential philosophers working within that theme will be made available, individually, to graduate students via Zoom through online sign-up sheet posted on the PSA member website. The students will select from the following categories that which best describes what they seek out of the opportunity:

  • Input on dissertation topic choice
  • Guidance on a problem occurring in own research
  • Clarification on an issue within professor’s research
  • Other (please describe)

Applicants will also  be invited to write a short paragraph in which they describe in more detail what they would like to discuss with the professor. Up to 6 students will be selected to participate in the office hour, where the selection will be made to maximize thematic cohesion and promote resource redistribution.   . Office hours will last up to 90 minutes and participants must be current members of the PSA. This opportunity is primarily for graduate students, but postdocs are free to apply as well. At the link below, there is a signup form, a request a professor form, and a form for professors to volunteer their services.

The upcoming themes and professors will be:

APRIL: New Directions in General Philosophy of Science

John D. Norton — Mon April 10th, 12pm EDT

Angela Potochnik —–Tues April 18th, 12pm EDT

MAY: Key Questions in Philosophy of Quantum Mechanics

Valia Allori —Tues May 2nd, 3pm EDT

David Wallace–Tues May 9th, 12-1, 1.30-2.30 EDT (2 sessions, 3 students in each)

JUNE: Recent Discussions on the Role of Values in Science

Heather Douglas — Tues June 6th, 1pm EDT

Matt Brown — Thurs June 15th, 12pm EDT

Town Hall Meetings

As announced in the President’s letter published in the January 2023 newsletter, we are calling two online townhall meetings open to all PSA members to participate in the consultation over the upcoming PSA Strategic Vision.

The society is planning to draft a document over the next twelve months highlighting the research priorities and underlying values of PSA that will inform the range of activities and initiatives of the society moving forward. The PSA Governing Board and a dedicated PSA committee will overview the compilation of such a document.

All PSA members are warmly invited to contribute to the conversations and provide their input and feedback by attending either of these two town hall meetings online (with different time zones to accommodate members in different parts of the world):

Tuesday 21 March 2023 at 5pm-6pm GMT Zoom Link

Wednesday 22 March 2023 at 8am-9am GMT Zoom Link

Please join us, this is your PSA and we value your feedback! Please also feel free to offer your thoughts via this short survey.

PSA Around the World 2023

Just a reminder that the deadline to submit a 1000-word abstract for this inaugural PSA Around the World 2023 is coming up on 31 March.

We have now a dedicated website for this conference where you can also find details, program committee, and the EasyChair link for submitting an abstract. The call for papers is open to *all* PSA members worldwide and is on *any* topic in Philosophy of Science.

For each day of the conference that will run fully online in November 2023, there will be dedicated panel sessions on a number of aspects related to researching and teaching philosophy of science in the context of East Asia and South East Asia with invited speakers from the region.

On behalf of the PSA President, PSA International Relations Committee and PSA AW 2023 Program Committee, we very much look forward to receiving your submissions.

Fundraising Committee Launch

The PSA is thriving – with committees and members, all of you, building on our strengths and
expanding our reach as an association on any number of fronts. With the PSA Executive Office
now established at the University of Cincinnati, and having weathered the pandemic and two
back-to-back conferences, it’s time to look ahead. We need to build the infrastructure and
resources necessary to support our expanding ambitions.

The PSA Fundraising Committee has been established with a mandate to explore creative ways
of diversifying the sources of revenue we rely on to run our meetings and to support all the
initiatives that make the PSA a vibrant community. We will be working with PSA committee
chairs to identify funding prospects and priorities, and we welcome your feedback as PSA members via this brief survey: what do you most value about the PSA and what should our priorities be going forward?

The PSA President, Michela Massimi, is convening a strategic planning task force and will host two town hall meetings later this month (March 21-22) to address these questions. We’ll be taking direction from you, and we hope you will join us in the process of developing a sustainable plan for ensuring that the PSA flourishes in the long-term.

Fundraising Committee Chair: Alison Wylie

Members: Kevin Zollman (Treasurer), Max Cormendy (PSA Executive Director), Taraneh
Wilkinson (PSA Development Officer), Maggie Clay Love (Consultant)
