Mathematicians can be interested, among other\n\nthings, in explaining or understanding mathematical results. A small yet growing body of\n\nliterature deals with analyzing what it could mean that something in mathematics has\n\nexplanatory value, for example by looking at the notion of explanatory proof. Others\n\nhave proposed to explicate the notion of mathematical understanding. Following recent\n\ntrends in the philosophy of science, it can also be fruitful to investigate explanation and\n\nunderstanding more intimately. The objective of this issue is to continue these recent\n\ntraditions by bringing together new philosophical insights into the nature of explanation\n\nand understanding within mathematics.\n\nWe invite contributions that deal with topics such as:\n\n• The explanatory value of mathematical proofs\n\n• Mathematical explanation beyond proof\n\n• Mathematical understanding\n\n• The relation between mathematical explanation and understanding\n\n• The relation between explanation/understanding and other mathematical values\n\n(e.g., simplicity, beauty, depth)\n\n• Case studies from the practice or history of mathematics\n\n• The fruitfulness of accounts of scientific explanation/understanding in philosophy of\n\nmathematics\n\nThe deadline for submission is June 15th 2020.
